Deicing Road Salts May Contribute to Impairment of Streambeds through Alterations to Sedimentation Processes

Deicing road salts have been increasingly used in the United States over past 80 years. Previous studies shown that these can deteriorating effects on freshwater organisms. Here, we hypothesize introduction of to streamwater also boost aggregation mud particles suspended water column. Such aggregation, known as flocculation, enhances deposition rates and may lead increased accumulation fine sediment streambeds, thereby contributing degradation benthic ecosystems. In this laboratory study, specifically investigate how impact (1) size distribution aggregates a turbulent column (2) overall settling rate mud. The results showed adding samples collected from stream southwest Virginia, USA changed particle sizes. addition salt led more existing large flocs an increase average by about 40%.
